TextFilter.app is a very simple Mac OS X utility which allows filtering of log files and other plain text documents. The software is intentionally bare bones; it is written to provide a solution to a specific problem, without requiring a lot of setup or command-line know-how.
To use the software, simply open an existing text document, or copy/paste text into a new document, and then type your search term into the “search” box at the top of the window. At the top right of the window is a mode selection menu.
“Highlight” mode causes any line matching your search term to be highlighted.
“Filter” mode causes all other text to be hidden completely (but not deleted!) leaving only the matching lines of text.
You may edit or copy the text in its filtered state.
Multiple filter stages can be achieved by performing a “Filter” operation, then “Select All” and “Copy” (which only copies the text matching your filter) followed by pasting the result into a new window, after which you may enter another filter.
From time to time we update our software with small fixes and enhancements. The following features are expected for the next release of the Text Filter software. If you have other feature suggestions which you think may be appropriate enhancements, feel free to contact us.
- Support for “Starts With” and “Ends With” search terms, in addition to the default “Contains” search.
